Shipmate Spotlight - Dave Learmont

A new series dedicated to getting to know the TBB crew a little better, Shipmate Spotlight uncovers something you didn’t know about our swashbuckling shipmates! We ‘kick off’ with Dave Learmont, Account Manager and grammar king…

1. What quote do you live your life by?

“When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: 'If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right.' It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs

2. Ten years ago, what did you think you’d be doing now?

When I was in college I was pretty set on becoming a sports journalist – I love football and I’d started to have a passion for writing, so it seemed a natural progression. Then I took A Level Business Studies; one module was on marketing and I fell in love with that. I write a lot of content now, so it’s a decent enough compromise!

3. What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

Pizza. Pizza is life.

4. What are you listening to/ reading/ watching at the moment?

I’m a bit behind the curve when it comes to TV, so I’m currently catching up with everyone else on the planet and watching Game of Thrones. I’m reading the Halo Mythos: A Guide to the Story of Halo as I’m a computer game nerd, and listening to Bonobo.

5. What do you like to do in your spare time?

As well as spending time with friends and family, I’m a football coach, so that takes up quite a bit of time! I also play football, and I’ve just bought a Cineworld Unlimited Card, meaning I can go and see any film I want, as many times as I want.

6. What’s your favourite thing about agency life?

I’d have to say the people. Everyone I work with is great to be around - we all have a real camaraderie. I look forward to coming into work every day, and the fast paced environment makes the time fly.

7. What’s the coolest digital marketing trend you’ve seen lately?

I’m really excited about what virtual reality has in store for marketing and the world in general. I wrote a piece on it recently and I think the opportunities are huge in terms of experiential marketing.

I’ve also become really interested in video in the past year – I’ve started watching a lot more original YouTube content and there are some really creative people out there pushing out great stuff. Video is only going to get bigger in my eyes.

8. What’s your previous working experience?

I did a placement year at Bosch Power Tools as part of my sandwich course at University, and it was an eye-opening experience. I got thrown in at the deep end pretty much straight away, but I wouldn’t have it any other way – it’s really helped me understand the other side of the coin to agency life.

When I left Uni with my degree in Marketing, I joined Stickyeyes in Leeds. Again, it was another eye-opening experience as to how fast paced agencies can be, but working with huge clients was a great learning curve.

9. What are you working on at the minute that we should know about?

We’ve got some exciting things lined up – Personally I’m looking at the content we’re creating for both ourselves and our clients, and looking at creating bigger campaigns for our clients that generate great ROI.

I’m also trying to get Arron on camera for an SEO video series, but unfortunately it’s been fruitless so far – maybe it's worth a Kickstarter campaign, after all, who doesn’t want to watch Arron Brown: The Keyword Kid?!

10. What are you excited about during the next year at TBB?

We moved offices last year which was great for us – we’re in a much more creative environment that will really allow us to grow. I’m looking forward to hopefully getting another household name on board, increasing our client base, and working closely with the design, web and SEO teams to push out bigger and better campaigns for our clients.
