Welcome aboard Izzy Massey

Izzy Massey recently joined the crew as an account manager and wasted no time getting to grips with her clients and forming strong working relationships. Here, Izzy shares the story of how she came onboard and what she hopes to achieve at The Bigger Boat.

While studying psychology at the University of Nottingham, I worked in a restaurant and learned the value of hard work and the basics of customer service, both of which proved valuable in every job I’ve held since. After graduating, I took a job as a receptionist to keep me afloat while figuring out what to do with the rest of my life.

I became office manager in six months and was responsible for all facilities, events and visiting clients. This was the perfect job for me until the pandemic hit, when I found myself with no office to manage and was placed on furlough. Being a busy-brained person, I searched for something to do and found software development. I quickly discovered how much I missed maths and science and spent every day teaching myself to code.

While still on furlough, I stumbled upon a job advert for a trainee software developer and jumped at the chance. Within this new role, I spent 12 weeks on an intense training programme, where I learned the basics of development, including HTML, CSS, JS, PHP and MySQL. As a junior developer, my role included training customers on how to use the software. Over time, I took on more responsibility, managing all customer development, attending onsite client meetings and workshops, and handling more complex operations.

When I saw the job opening at The Bigger Boat, I knew I had to apply. While I wasn’t particularly looking for a new role, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me. The position encompasses everything I enjoy; building relationships with clients, working on exciting projects and collaborating with brilliant people.

I feel very much like a sponge at the moment, soaking up all the knowledge I can from the talented people around me. I’m so excited about my future with TBB and feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work with and learn from a group of hardworking, creative and brilliant people. I’m particularly looking forward to learning more about SEO and paid search, as it seems to be a really interesting combination of psychology and statistics.

Outside of work, I enjoy horse riding, weightlifting and swimming. I grew up in Scarborough and really miss the sea since moving to Huddersfield. But I’ve found a real passion for swimming over the past few years and I hope to swim the English Channel one day.
