My year at The Bigger Boat - Max

In September 2017, I began my degree in Digital Media Computing at Birmingham City University. It included an optional sandwich year, which enables students to gain industry experience during their degree through a work placement. I was not sure which industry I wanted to pursue but after some research, I decided on digital marketing. Following a spontaneous chat with my cousin, I was put in touch with The Bigger Boat’s managing director Andy and this lead me to getting the placement at TBB.

Developing new skills

TBB has really helped me focus my career goals as, when I initially joined, I was not sure which career path I wanted to go down. This was due to my course at university being very broad with aspects of computing, design and development throughout. I felt digital marketing would allow me to apply my knowledge from these multiple disciplines and TBB enabled me to do this. Digital marketing has turned out to be something I really enjoy and I intend to pursue a career within this industry once I graduate.

Throughout the year, I have mainly been working in digital marketing. I had zero experience within this area when I joined but it was one of the areas I was very interested in. The crew taught me everything I needed to know to get going, which included the fundamentals of SEO and PPC advertisement. Throughout the year, I’ve continued to learn new skills and gain valuable experience with the help of my colleagues.

A year of achievements

I joined TBB at a very exciting time for the company as it was about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. In the same year, the crew won a Northern Digital Award and business has continued to grow with a variety of fantastic clients joining us.

My year at TBB has been really good. I have enjoyed it a lot and gained some valuable experience. Some of my favourite moments include the team-building day we had at a water sports centre and the 10th birthday party

I intend to go back to university in September and complete my degree, after which I want to travel for a while. I was going to go this summer before university but the COVID-19 crisis has impacted plans. After I return, I will try to find a job within the digital marketing sector potentially abroad and continue my career from there.
