Shipmate Spotlight – Mark Jenkins.

A new series dedicated to getting to know the TBB crew a little better, Shipmate Spotlight uncovers something you didn’t know about our hearty shipmates.

1. What quote do you live your life by?

‘Keep it simple stupid’. I can’t remember exactly where I read that quote but I try and apply it to pretty much everything I do. I’ve found some of the best ideas sometimes seem too ‘simple’ or ‘obvious’ but most of the time you find that they work best.

2. Ten years ago, what did you think you’d be doing now?

Ten years ago I was only twelve, so probably wanted to be a footballer. Honestly, I didn’t have a clue at that age but computers and business always intrigued me, so I suppose working in a marketing agency fits somewhere in between the two.

3. What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

Probably the cinema. As great as Netflix and Amazon Prime are, I don’t’ think you can beat watching films on the big screen. It’s also a good excuse to scoff a lot of popcorn.

4.  What are you listening to/ reading/ watching at the moment?

I don’t really watch much ‘TV’ because I find it quite boring. I’d say that I watch YouTube and Amazon Prime more than anything and the increase in ‘Professional’ YouTubers has created some great channels. I recently watched ‘Sneaky Pete’ on Prime – definitely one to add to your list to watch.

5. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy golf and have started playing every few weeks; it’s something I’ve always wanted to be good at playing so recently started practicing more. I also play 5 a side sometimes with a few of the guys from work on a Friday. When I’m not at work, it’s good to get away from a screen, what with working on the computer during the week.

6. What’s your favourite thing about agency life?

The variation of work is great because you’re never stuck on one project or task for days on end, there’s a chance to work on lots of different accounts. There’s also definitely a more relaxed approach to working in an agency compared to other places I’ve worked, which makes working more enjoyable.

7. What’s the coolest digital marketing trend you’ve seen lately?

This isn’t exactly a ‘trend’ but we’ve recently started optimising the AdWords campaigns we manage using a new ad format, recently released by Google, which allows you to use a stronger call to actions. So far, the conversion rate has improved for every account we’ve set them up on, driving a better ROI for our clients ad spend.

8. What’s your previous working experience?

I joined The Bigger Boat straight after completing a marketing related course at Kirklees College, so didn’t have any real agency experience but wanted to learn. Before college I worked for one year as an IT & networking apprentice for Yorkshire Water but quickly realised that wasn’t the route I wanted to go – I found the whole ‘corporate’ atmosphere and attitude very mundane and rigid, which doesn’t really sit well with me.

9. What are you working on at the minute that we should know about?

I spend a lot of my time working on the different PPC campaigns we run for various clients. One of my goals is to set up more detailed tests, with the aim of driving a better ROI –  We actively work on optimising campaigns on a daily basis but you can always find a way to get that 5% more by testing different ideas

 10. What are you excited about during the next year at TBB?

After moving to a bigger office last year, we’re currently in the process of adding to the team, so we’ll have some new people starting soon. If things keep going the way they are, hopefully, it won’t be long before we’re expanding even further.
